There is no lack of alternatives available in the scene lighting marketplace, but some stand out as offering a particularly good mix of quality, flexibility, value, potential reliability and support.
The iLight range of "iCan" lighting has impressed us greatly. Not only is it UK produced but it offers almost limitless flexibility and sophistication.
At the more basic end of the spectrum, iLight now offer Zen.
In common with many other scene lighting products, Zen has its roots in the US. The "J" back box is therefore a pretty substantial affair. Unusually, the "J" box is included in the price of the unit. In common with other units of this type, the live, neutral (and earth of course) feeds need to be available within the back - box. Conventional older style UK lighting wiring rarely does this, although it is becoming more common on new properties.
The Zen unit has four or six lighting channels and thirty two lighting scenes (eight are directly accessed from buttons located along its base). The heavily tinted translucent panel allows the LED level indicators to glow mysteriously through the smooth and stylish fascia.
The level of programmability is impressive (timed events, even password protection!) and each unit can be remote controlled by either additional keypads connected via Cat 5 (ethernet style cabling), infra-red remote handset, or linked to another Zen unit.

Should the number of channels be too much for the application in hand, some can be routed to another room where they are controlled by a standard UK wall plate sized keypad that only has access to the channels you allow it to use. Indeed, if the size and style of the Zen unit does not suit your decor, there is nothing to stop it being tucked away in a hidden location, perhaps near the consumer unit, with the keypads as the only visible means of control.
