The term "X series" had been informally applied to the CD5X, Flatcap 2X PSU, NAC122X preamplifier and NAP150X power amp. This, along with the recent Nait XS integrated amplifier, has been the entry point for the upgradable Naim products.
The arrival of the Nait XS created a bit of a problem. Whilst the more expensive 122X/150X combo was better in some respects, it was far from the straightforward step that Naim users expect. The choice was the more gutsy pre-power against the less driven but more cerebral, subtle and resolving Nait XS. In the blink of an eye we now have a proper upgrade to the NAC122x (now NAC152XS) and the NAP150X (now NAP155XS). The CD5XS, NAT 5XS tuner and Flatcap XS complete the picture. Welcome to the XS series.
In addition to the internal changes (and there are many), the new XS components sport a black anodised aluminium fascia just like their more expensive siblings. It's a subtle change, but it does look rather more dapper than the paint finish that is now reserved for the entry Nait5i-2 and CD5i-2 amplifier and CD player.
Sound quality has moved on too. The new CD5XS is a more refined and rounded performer, the 152XS preamplifier can accept an external power feed for the digital control circuits (as per all its more expensive brethren) and allows a more natural voicing to come with wallop, resolution and refinement. The 155XS power amplifier runs the NAP200 closer than you might expect. The CD palyer can now be 'booted up' as either a CD transport or player, in readiness for the new Naim DAC.
All in all, the price rises from the old series can be justified on sound quality alone with the smarter appearance and increased flexibility being an added benefit. All are here awaiting your judgement!
One word of caution. Our CD5XS and Flatcap XS both sounded pretty dire for the first few days. Run-in has proved unusually significant.
