better than sitting the thing out in the hope that you do not notice.
Finally, we aim to make the experience of auditioning kit (even just a pair of headphones) constructive, rewarding and, well, fun. Music is, after all, supposed to be an uplifting and predominately enjoyable experience.
The listening environment is homely (for fairly obvious reasons) and, with our lovely Jura coffee machine from Red Monkey Coffee, the coffee good.
Should you think you have found what you are looking for, home trials are encouraged.
Our favourite products are raved about on this site. We cover a slightly wider spectrum: the full list of products is below.
We sell hi-fi music analogue and digital hardware, cables and accessories. Oh, and home cinema, lighting, multi-room audio too.
Andy Heavens, and I set up another business called Playhaus in 2003. This was intended to specialise in home cinema, lighting, multi-room installations - the smart homes stuff. Signals was the springboard for Playhaus but we figured that hi-fi audio buffs get pretty irritated when the magazine or web site they are reading witters on about products that hold no interest.
The financial segregation of the companies was good for the accountants and the tax man but made little sense otherwise, so Playhaus Ltd was effectively taken over by Signals UK Ltd. Pretty cool to be this small and still have a take-over!
With thirteen years trading as Signals and many more years of experience behind us, we offer a low key informed and relaxed alternative to high street retailing.
For years the Signals USP has been a slightly eclectic mix of products backed up by a lot of information and opinions both on the web and in regular newsletters. Some of the brands stocked were relatively rare and, certainly some of the combinations were unavailable anywhere else. I'd like to put it down to our transparent honesty and good humour but for whatever reason, people travelled serious distances to hear products. Quite a few of the kind souls even bought them.
Latterly we have dropped a number of the unusual brands and taken up one rather more mainstream one, namely Naim Audio. Is there now less reason for people to make the trip?
The trouble with rhetorical questions is that you can guess the answer.
We might have become a little bit Naim-centric but we still aim to put together combinations that truly get the goose bumps underway. In fact getting the best out of what strikes us as some pretty amazing electronics has made life even more rewarding.
Cables, right back to the mains, and speaker / amplifier combinations remain as relevant as ever to giving the end user the best possible value for money.
We realise that most people want constructive guidance. We are happy to point out more cost effective solutions or areas where a small extra cost is more than justified. If a combination sounds crap, or even rubbish, we will say so. Far
